At some point in time we have all experienced constipation. Constipation is one of those things people hate to talk about. Ever wonder why we are so comfortable to urinate in a public restroom but we dread having to do a number 2? We would rather suffer and wait until we get home. What in our socialization made us think we should hide the act of excreting harmful waste?
In my Health Coaching practice, I have noticed persons get a bit uneasy whenever they are asked if they have experienced constipation. In fact persons who suffer from the condition often down play it.
The truth is, Constipation is not to be taken lightly, it’s a very serious condition that can cause several side effects. These side effects often impact the quality of living of the individual.
Constipation lowers the body’s resistance. Other excretory organs such as lymph, skin, liver, kidney and lungs become overworked. Some of the side effects are:
1. Hemarhoids and fissures
2. Abdominal pains
3. Bloating and Gas
4. Severe Headache
5. Skin Blemishes
6. Halitosis (bad breath)
7. Low energy
8. Moods Swings
9. Heart Disorders
10. Arthritis
11. Varicose Veins
12. Weight Gain
13. Slow metabolism
The list could go on and on. Constipation can be caused by a number of issues, stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, and even a change in routine, whatever the cause it should be treated and must never be taken lightly.
The common mistake is that most of us ignore our constipation until it becomes unbearable or chronic.
Like any other health issue, it’s important to treat the root cause. Depending on the severity, there are different options to assist your bowel, in eliminating at least once a day. While pharmaceuticals can be used prolonged used is not advised.
There are several different approaches that can be taken to get your bowel movement regular. It is important to deal with this on a individual basic as no two persons situation is exactly the same. Working with a Health Care Practitioner may be best rather than self medicating. Avoid excessive use of the cleansing teas, and laxatives containing SENNA (this slow poisons the body).
Instead, cultivate some good habits of regular exercise, increased water consumption, eat lots of green vegetables and fruits, decrease excessive processed foods. Address stressful situation and do not allow them to take root.
